About
What began as a deep fascination with opals quickly became the foundation of a business built on first-hand experience and industry relationships. Driven to understand these remarkable gemstones at their source, our founder -William McMellin- travelled throughout the Australian outback, journeying between remote opal mining towns and immersing himself in the culture and way of life that surrounds the industry.
Along the way, he built lasting relationships with respected miners and traders who shared not only their knowledge, but also direct access to some of Australia’s finest opals. These connections remain at the heart of the business today, allowing him to source stones directly from the miners themselves and bring exceptional Australian opal to the UK market.
William's time in Lightning Ridge, NSW - home of the Black Opal - gave him invaluable hands-on experience in opal mining, deepening his understanding of the gemstone from the ground up. He also learnt in the fundamentals of cutting and polishing opal from rough, refining these skills over the years to ensure every stone reaches its full potential.
After years of building trusted contacts within the opal industry and carefully curating a substantial and diverse collection, we now provide exclusive access to Australian opals at competitive wholesale prices. Each stone is ethically sourced directly from Australian miners and expertly cut and polished here in the UK, ensuring authenticity, quality, and craftsmanship in every piece.
Member of: Lightning Ridge Mining Association
W.M OPALS founder - William McMellin - is a member of the Lightning Ridge Mining Association. Joining this community is achieved by being recommended, then voted in by existing members made up from opal miners and traders.
The LRMA advocates on behalf of opal miners, challenging government policies that threaten the sustainability of mining in the region. Founded in 1974, the association has played a vital role in opposing and overturning legislation and regulations that once made mining and living in Lightning Ridge increasingly difficult.
